From roofs to countertops to floors and more, slate is an durable and waterproof stone. Through freezing cold or baking heat, slate roofs can go centuries with little maintenance needed. Like any natural stone, it also has very low embodied energy, making it quite eco-friendly.
wood walls and slate floor in the Marlboro College cabins

Architects Joan M. Soranno and John Cook forged five guest cabins that embrace the landscape and celebrate the spirit of a classical music festival that takes place on the pastoral Marlboro College campus. The new cabins reduce the key form of the Cape Cod–style structures found on the campus. They sport the telltale pitched roof, wood exterior, and central chimney, but feature a more contemporary feeling. The interiors are restrained, yet comfortable and warm thanks to white pine walls and a slate tile floor.

Master bathroom with slate tiles

Brod Hart’s home in London’s Finsbury Park neighborhood is hidden away on a quiet street filled with the typical Victorian houses that populate the area. But behind the large steel doors that shield it from view stands what once began as stables, later served as a piano factory, and finally was converted to a wheelchair-accessible private residence. Hart managed the renovation himself and lived on-site during the process, which was challenging. His clever DIY skills and design tricks paid off: The end result is an industrial-chic modern house, fully accessible to wheelchair users.

The upstairs master bath is dark slate tiles, red walls, and gold vintage accents.

Back façade with Scottish oak and black aluminum cladding

Made of hardy Scottish materials and holding a Japanese heart, this Edinburgh house shows that two architects from disparate cultures can design a home that bridges the gap.

The framed aluminum of the corner window by Natralight breaks up the roof of recycled slate tiles, which is entirely of a piece with the roofs around it. The Scottish oak cladding comes from Abbey Timber and the black aluminum cladding from MSP Scotland.
