As fall turns into winter, there's no better time to start thinking about your home's sense of hygge—that is, the spare but very cozy minimalism epitomized by Danish houses.
Minimalist bedroom with platform bed

One tactic for instant hygge: Carve out space under the eaves for a cozy attic bed. In this former fishermen’s cottage outside Copenhagen, the residents did just that with a custom designed platform bed by Bjerre-Poulsen that maximizes storage and fits the unusual space. One Danish family forged a new path by living for one year in the Active House, a green-home prototype. One time-tested Danish approach to a long winter? Embrace it with all-white interiors. Photo by Jens Passoth.

Danes surround themselves with bright colors and beautiful items, as they spend much of their time at home due to the country's high cost of living and its lengthy winters.

To counteract how much time they spend at home due to the country's high cost of living and its lengthy winters, Danes also surround themselves with bright colors and beautiful items. Modern brick fireplace.

One absolute must-have for amping up the hygge factor? A fireplace. Life inside this summerhouse in North Zealand, Denmark, revolves around the brick chimney, which the architect surrounded with a concrete counter that wraps from the kitchen to the living area. Photo by Karina Tengberg.

There's plenty of alfresco seating outside the East Wing auditorium. The auditorium's rectangular form was inspired by the barns that once stood there.

Crucial tip: Even in a modern design, reference Nordic tradition. This conference center, designed by the Amsterdam-based firm SeARCH, is an extension of a 14th-century Danish farm and building. Its warm wood cladding keeps the instutional structure from seeming too harsh for the environment. Photo by Iwan Baan.

Modern guesthouse in Præstø, Denmark

Also note the similarities between Danish and Japanese design. In Præstø, on the Danish island of Zealand, a guesthouse infuses the regional vernacular with Japanese influence, including a fuss-free wood-paneled interior that glows with warmth.
