Jonathan Adler and Simon Doonan collaborated with New Haven, Connecticut, firm Gray Organschi on their vacation home on Fire Island. After spending years in a 1970s A-frame in the area, the creative couple decided to build their first-ever ground-up project. The site-sensitive exterior belies an interior festooned with kaleidoscopic colors and an array of tactile materials. The Peter rug, Malibu sofa, and ceramics are Adler’s own designs. The tables, pendant lights, and rocker are vintage.

Modern bedroom with white bookshelves and chandelier by Bocci

Designer Omer Arbel develops his latest works inside an eclectic Vancouver home filled with pets and prototypes. “Many of my pieces are first-runs from Bocci, so I am the first to figure out if something is wrong [with the design]. In the bedroom, we have an early 28 chandelier; we used glass fading from white to clear for the first time, which gives it an eerie luminescence," Arbel explains.

Citrus Avenue Central Atrium

Less is more at a California residence designed and crafted by sustainable building leader Prime Five Homes, a Los Angeles-based real estate development company that specializes in arrestingly modern, eco-friendly homes. Inside, large, open spaces filled with simple geometries and soft neutral colors “boost the morale, health and well-being of its occupants.” Large windows throughout the house eliminate the need for elaborate lighting schemes; a simple multi-bulb pendant fills the atrium with light in the evening.

multi-generational home in San Diego, California, elegantly combines sustainability and luxury. Throughout, finishes are simple and minimal: polished concrete floors, gallery-white walls, Caesarstone counters, walnut cabinetry, and white-painted cinder block. Pink & Brown’s Corkscrew Pendant Lamp lights the stair leading to the family room

Family Matters dining room with handmade pendant.

Actors David Alan Basche and Alysia Reiner rework their Harlem town house with an eco-sensibility and an eye for smarter spaces. The design team enclosed the vestibule of the front entrance to offer an area in which everyone can remove shoes and coats. The dining area boasts a handmade pendant by The Light Factory in Baltimore, Maryland.

When they want to escape the mayhem of city life in Chicago, Diane Pascal and Thomas Richie retreat to their low-profile getaway in Hennepin, Illinois. Though minimal, the furnishings in the living room each make a statement. In the kitchen, compact fluorescent lightbulbs affixed to the ceiling are a simple solution.

Surrounded on all sides by a sweeping Canadian hayfield, the 23.2 House designed by Omer Arbel is an angular ode to rural life. Arbel’s projects—both products and architectural commissions—follow a chronological numbering system. The house itself is his 23rd design, while the one-of-a-kind glass pendants that accent nearly every room like a starscape are called “28.”

living room and concert venue with a view

An old barn in a Beverly Hills canyon inspires a new, clean-lined guesthouse and concert venue. Located in the renovated barn, the living room can be transformed into a performance space that seats 80. Accompanying the Steinway piano is a sideboard from Restoration Hardware; the orb-like pendants are from Cisco Home.
