Paul McCartney sang it best on Ram: "I look high, I look low // I'm lookin' everywhere I go // lookin' for a home in the heart of the country." In honor of the epic search for that idyllic rural abode, we've corralled 10 modern spaces that are sure to get you house hunting.

In central Spain, Josemaria Churtichaga and Cayetana de la Quadra-Salcedo crafted a modern vacation home attuned to its pastoral setting. Though the structure is firmly planted in the 21st century, sheep from a farm across the road still meander to Churtichaga and de la Quadra-Salcedo’s house to graze—an enduring reminder of the region’s history and traditions.

Modern porch with triple-glazed casement windows

Architect Lisa Moffitt designed this sustainable, 925-square-foot home in rural Ontario. “There’s a presence to that place—it’s vast, and constantly shifting,” Moffitt says of the land. “It was clear that this house should be an observation shed for the changing landscape beyond.”

Swedish guesthouse pavilion with pergola over the pool and george nelson benches

In rural Sweden, architect Bengt Mattias Carlsson created a sauna and pool pavilion adjacent to a residence dating from the late 1800s. The pergola is made from glue-laminated timber beams set atop steel posts; it protects the pool from falling pine needles. George Nelson benches offer places to sit.

A wood-burning stove from Harvia, of Finland, heats the sauna. The pavilion’s rough-cut pine walls are treated with tar, a preservative that yields a time-worn aesthetic.

Inside a house located on a remote plot of land in Norway, built-in benches function both as seating and as spare beds in the living room. Holm says the striped, hand-woven fabric she found in Greece is indestructible, and the cork flooring throughout the house has gone 40 years without needing replacing.

Modern prefab vacation home in Washington facade with steel cladding

A prefabricated off-the-grid vacation home in eastern Washington provides not just a getaway, but lessons in learning to be one with the land. The steel cladding has developed a patina similar to the ochre-red color of bedrock found in the area.

Modern prefab vacation home in Washington living room with true north stove and angular ceiling

The restrained 820-square-foot interior is defined by the angular ceiling. Architect Jesse Garlick left the prefabricated structural panels unfinished to save on material costs. A True North wood stove from Pacific Energy heats the house. Max, the family’s cat, naps on a vintage rug purchased on eBay.

“We wanted the essence of a New England barn,” says Bobbie Callahan of her retreat in Maine. “The house is like a sculpture, a piece of jazz, like a riff on barnness.”

This house on the shores of New Zealand’s Lake Wakatipu is made up of two parts: a rear wing containing the studio and a guest room, and the north-facing living quarters (which, in the southern hemisphere, attract the most sun) overlooking the lake. Architects Bronwen Kerr and Pete Ritchie designed a relaxed family home that reclines into its spectacular landscape.

The kids, Archie, Linus, and Olive, stand in the kitchen, beneath the strand board–clad stairwell that leads to the bedrooms. Kerr and Ritchie initially envisaged rich materials for the interior, but changed their minds in favor of what they call a “cartoony” approach with cheaper, hard-wearing elements. “We didn’t want the space to feel too grown-up,” Kerr says.
