modernized open kitchen, Los Angeles

At their house and flower farm in Los Angeles’s Glassell Park, Laura Gabbert and Andrew Avery bring friends, family, and a fleet of urban gardeners together. Architects Jeff Allsbrook and Silvia Kuhle of L.A.-based firm Standard arranged their two main living spaces in an L-shape to maximize a sense of transparency.

Modern kitchen with Karbon faucet from Kohler

Architect Jayna Cooper had never designed a house before, much less played general contractor, when she broke ground on her new home in the middle of Los Angeles in 2009. After a grueling four months of hands-on hard work—managing subcontractors, sourcing materials, driving the front loader—she completed the design at $200 per square foot.

Modern renovation living room Bubeshko Apartments

With the help of DSH Architects, a pair of intrepid Angelenos restored (and gently updated) Rudolph Schindler’s iconic Bubeshko Apartments. As the renovation began, resident Joe DeMarie would talk with Bubeshko about certain details in the apartments, namely the owners’ unit where they had both lived.

Los Angeles architect Ray Kappe built a multilevel house for his family back in 1967, and the results still resonate today. The front door is tucked under a cantilevered terrace.

Though tricked out with high-tech touches, this house’s greenest feature is decidedly low tech: the family’s intention to make it their lifelong home.

The house features thick walls with deep shelves carved into them, intended to save space and convey the solidity of Spanish-style houses.

Traditions collide in Los Angeles when architect Jeremy Levine hotwires SoCal Spanish with international haute-moderne. The resulting house of courtyards, shelves, and even some repurposed car parts is a hybrid sensation.

The dining room. Much of the furniture was purchased from vintage modern home stores in L.A. The furnishings represent an attitude—whenever possible, recycle, reuse, and support local manufacturers—as well as a strong sense of aesthetics at home.

By putting solar power and recycled materials to use, Eric Garcetti and his partner transformed a mid-century house on a cozy hillside plot into a sustainable home with garden terraces and panoramic views.
