Examples of the midcentury modern style, practiced by nationally and locally prominent architects alike, dot the American landscape. We've assembled just a few of those homes that found new life through new owners, architects, and builders.

Plagued by remodeling pitfalls, two tenacious homeowners reinvented a soggy midcentury home outside Seattle as a modern masterpiece. “The transparency of the house is really quite wonderful,” says Grace Kim of the residence, now open to the lake view.

Japanese-Inspired Bainbridge Island house rear deck

Renowned Pacific Northwest architect Gene Zema, known for his mix of modernism and Japanese architecture, designed this house around 1974 towards the end of his career. It features a rich palette of woods and Japanese joinery visible throughout the home. The architects added an extended deck (seen here) that creates an opportunity for gatherings. It also smoothly transitions the interior level, which hovers above the ground on pylons, back to the earth. Steel columns were specially implemented so the clients could string lights over the deck. A fire-pit is now located in front of these steps.

Modern home renovation in Napa includes redwood and glass facade with selamat design chairs

Two designers restored this low-slung midcentury gem in Napa, California, by unsung Bay Area modernist Jack Hillmer. The house wraps around a sycamore tree planted at the time of construction. The outdoor furniture (seen here) is from Selamat Designs. “In most buildings, everything is set,” says one of the designers. “In this house, you have three ways you can dine—I love that. The most surprising wonder about the project has been the ability to move things around.”

Midcentury home in Austin with second-story addition

For over fifty years, A.D. Stenger was a unique figure in the American architectural landscape. Idiosyncratic and independent, Stenger acted as developer, architect, and builder to produce his own unique brand of relaxed modern architecture. This Stenger home was originally only one story, but the need for two children’s bedrooms (and to retain the modest backyard) demanded a second floor. Webber + Studio, Architects' first challenge in renovating the structure was to preserve the home’s character in the second-story addition.

Modern backyard area with raised and creased roof

An architectural designer and an artist harnessed the collective power of their design firm to remake a dilapidated mid-century home into a hillside perch for their family. With a nod to the natural skew of the cliffs nearby, the roof creases inward on the edges, with folds called crickets. The design is twofold: The lower roof utilizes a number of super-integrated gutters and the upper roof collects rainwater.
