At this smart tech–equipped family villa in Prague, door-to-celing glass overlooks a deck and the garden beyond. The facade is a combination of light-gray stucco and cement panels.
A good dose of Barragán influence turned a dark and beleaguered mid-century house into a family home for the ages, where flashes of pattern and interior planes of saffron and pink stucco bring bursts of bright, warm color. Dawn Farmer sits on the bed in the master bedroom of her home in Venice Beach. The house is clad in smooth stucco top-coated with white Venetian plaster, and has a perimeter wall made of Cor-Ten steel panels and stuccoed cinder blocks.
Architect Ernesto Pereira focused on three simple things when remodeling a typical Portuguese dwelling in coastal Vila do Conde: “Wood for its comfort, water for its peace, and light for its vitality,” he explains. He balanced these primary elements in the Silver Wood House, a domestic oasis that brings home the sandy colors and textures of the nearby beach. White stucco clads sheltering walls, while silver wood slats line openings like doors, windows, and terraces.
Architect Guy Zucker, who designed the Heavy Light House in Israel, says that he wanted the color palette of the three “rocks” to feel like earth or sand. The exterior stucco treatment is grainy, rather than smooth, and coated with a radicalized sand color.
Architect José Andrade Rocha favored light colored materials while updating this historic flat in Lisbon. “Using white allowed me to lighten up small interior spaces and at the same time respect the original colors of the carpentry and stucco work,” Rocha says.
