Off-the-Grid Cabin in Arkansas

Completed for just over $118,000, the peaceful cabin of Jason Gordon was designed to have as little of an impact on its environment as possible. Green elements include a photovoltaic array, a rainwater catchment system, and a pier footing foundation that elevates the house over the land, minimizing site disturbance.

Sustainable Retreat on a Fire-Devastated Site in Boulder

After a fire devastated their Boulder, Colorado property, Colorado architect Renée del Gaudio and her family salvaged about 300 burned trees for construction lumber or firewood to use for their new, eco-friendly home. “We hardly ever use mechanical heating,” says del Gaudio. “We have a high-efficiency wood-burning stove, and between that and passive solar heating, during the day we only use radiant heating on the bottom floor.”

A Modern, Energy-Efficient Smart Home

In the West Village neighborhood of Davis, a college town located 15 miles west of Sacramento, teams at Honda and UC Davis kitted out a 1,945-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom house with experimental and on-the-market technology to accomplish net-zero energy consumption. Adele Chang and Mark Rohling of Pasadena firm Lim Chang Rohling & Associates designed the house, which is three times more water efficient than a typical house hold.
