Shortly after arriving to the United States from Denmark, where he had worked with Kaare Klint and architect Ernst Kuhn, Risom began to collaborate with Hans Knoll, founder of Knoll, in 1941. Risom's interior and furniture designs for Knoll are among the company's first, and include the Risom Lounge Chair, which brought the natural materials and understated form of Scandinavian design to large-scale U.S. production.
