Didn’t score a ticket to Coachella? Never fear—there’s still much to see and do in the California desert valley that has long been a hipster mecca. Comprising Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Indio, La Quinta, Indian Wells, Coachella, and more, the valley holds some great modern spots. We tour our favorites.

A hop, skip, and a jump away from the Palm Springs Art Museum, also designed by E. Stewart Williams, is the Santa Fe Federal Savings and Loan building from 1961, which has gained new life as the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center. Restored by the respected firm Marmol Radziner, the building will be the subject of the discussion Historic Preservation and Adaptive Reuse at Dwell on Design Los Angeles next month.

Palm Springs has a plethora of appealing places to stay, among them the Saguaro hotel, where one may partake in the astounding guacamole at hotel bar, El Jefe; a meal at Iron Chef Jose Garces’s restaurant Tinto; or a drink at the might-as-well-be-done-by-Barragán pool. Photo by Tim Street-Porter.

We couldn't resist a #TBT shot of Mirage, an art installation and homage to the desert modernism of nearby Palm Springs, from Coachella 2013. Coachella art director Paul Clemente envisioned the 6,000-square-foot structure and it was erected by Vermont-based builder Russ Bennett. Meant to be a kind of hang-out zone, the geometric piece was inspired by the work of architects like Neutra and Frey. View the 2015 Coachella art installations here.
