Every Monday, @dwell and @designmilk invite fans and experts to weigh in on trending topics in design on Twitter.
Brooklyn family kitchen.

What are some new trends you're seeing in kitchen and bathroom design?

@PULPdesigns: Brass & matte black are a huge trend right now!

@ZacharyEdelson: As the kitchen becomes central to work/hosting/cooking, it needs to feel open like the living room.

@Allie_Weiss: A big trend we saw at KBIS is cabinets that automatically close and anything that requires less reaching/bending.

What are some creative ways you can save space in a small kitchen or bathroom?

@AileenKwun: For storage in small kitchen spaces, think vertically.

@PULPdesigns: We love multi-function sinks with sliding cutting boards & compartments, like Kohler's.

@ModDesignGuru: [The] Robern Balletto Vanity flipdown storage solutions [are] precise.

Mondern Boston family kitchen renovation that's wheelchair accessible

How can we make these hard-working rooms accessible to people of all ages and abilities?

@LetUsSuppose: Good design for aging is good design for all. Emphasize functionality for every feature.

@ModDesignGuru: Brizo Touch faucets for bath and kitchen [are] easier on aging joints.

@Allie_Weiss: To the sight or hearing impaired, lighting/sound treatments on the cooktop knobs help indicate if the burner is still on.

When will we start seeing smart tech enter the kitchen and bath?

@thisisheatherc: I'm looking forward to seeing how designers use VR/AR as a design tool.

@PULPdesigns: We’re seeing some innovation now. TOTO introduced a self-cleaning toilet using UV light!

@modernindenver: Tech is already here! Grohe digital lets you pre-program water temp, flow rate + duration.

What materials are popular lately in these rooms?

@PULPdesigns: Marble is and will always hold strong as a classic. But, it's getting fearless.

@thisisheatherc: We're seeing kitchens and bathrooms go dark with rich woods, warm metals and lots of marble.

@ModDesignGuru: Wood Porcelain is everywhere, now used on floors and walls.

Modern Toronto kitchen and dining table outfitted with smart home technology

Thinking long-term, how do you envision the kitchen and bath of the future will look?

@PULPdesigns: We always think long-term for our clients. Smart phones are not going anywhere. We want more in kitchen & bath technology!

@Allie_Weiss: The emerging millennial client demands functionality, which will dictate more user-friendly solutions in the kitchen/bath.

@koehlerdesigns: Better lighting designs, more soft surfaces, small appliances that are great at 1 thing.
