Every Monday, @dwell and @designmilk invite fans and experts to weigh in on trending topics in design on Twitter. Architects Bercy Chen, D'Arcy Jones, and Tom Davis joined #ModernMonday this week to share their thoughts on indoor-outdoor design. Check out a few of our favorite responses, and use the hashtag #ModernMonday to join the conversation next week at 1pm EST / 10am PST.

How would you describe the perfect balance between indoors and outdoors in a home?

@OlyTsav: Screens on big open windows, large bushy house plants, and skylights that reach up to the second floor.

@darcy_jones: Ensure all exterior spaces are visible from at least one indoor space. Otherwise, why have outdoor spaces or landscapes?

@TDArchitecture: It depends on where you live but I like to bring the outdoors in whenever possible whether literally or visually.

What are some strategies for making outdoor spaces feel just as integral to a home as indoor ones?

@BercyChenStudio: Our homes borrow exterior spaces to make the interior feel more expansive, blurring the inside/out boundary.

@darcy_jones: Repeat some materials indoors + outdoors. The same tile or concrete floor used in and out makes a strong spatial “glue."

@OlyTsav: Benches, lanterns, pools, etc. Paths that lead you through the scene. Interiors usually have some direction for us.

How do specific climates inform the design decisions behind a house?

@thisisheatherc: Climate impacts residents' needs: a place to avoid the heat vs a cozy place to warm up. Good design solves these problems.

@darcy_jones: Temper hot, humid, rainy or cold climates with design, not with technology. Light all spaces with the sun, not volts.

What are the best ways to overcome challenging site conditions, like steep cliffs or existing trees?

@darcy_jones: Don’t shoehorn a square into a triangle. Spin liabilities into one-of-a-kind assets. Play which came first, tree or house?

@BercyChenStudio: Design the foundation to follow the topography. Split levels follow the slope.

When Mother Nature brings unwanted things like floods--or even bugs--how can we shut the outdoors out of our homes?

@darcy_jones: Squeaky screen doors are the sound of summer. And they work. Site a house w/ a farmer’s pragmatism + a sculptor’s oomph.

@OlyTsav: Screens on windows, high foundations, trees to break strong winds.

When a traditional backyard isn't an option, what are some ways a homeowner can create green space?

@aileenkwun: A living wall can transform a room into an indoor garden.

@DektonUSA: Rooftop gardens! Living walls! Utilize any space with lots of daylight.
