What are the pros and cons of a formal design education? Is it always necessary?

@artcenteredu: Depends on your ambitions. Skills & how-tos are easy. Concepts, history, complex problem-solving take longer to learn.

@ZacharyEdelson: Cons: Expensive! Pros: A good program teaches how big ideas and details/construction/execution are both essential.

@modernindenver: A combo of formal design education + hands-on training are essential for success. You can’t replace on-the-job training.

@AllieWeiss: Some design programs offer great opportunities for hands-on experience: http://bit.ly/1QxrDh0

@livingwhite: To be an architect, yes, but lots of other design professions don't require formal education. Passion, however, is a must.

What advice would you give a young person who is considering a career in design?

@Polycor: Start making relationships now. Seek a mentor who shares your passion. Find you niche and kill it.

@CenterForArch: Our K-12 and adult programs are a wonderful exposure to design thinking.

@MTHWKSHN: Design is a business. Working is very different from your education. Get as much experience inside & outside the classroom.

@LetUsSuppose: Talk to practicing designers. Feedback from practitioners will paint the most accurate pic of what you're getting into.
