Interior designer, author, and TV host Nate Berkus joined #ModernMonday this week to discuss what goes into making a kitchen look timeless. Check out a few of our favorite responses, and use the hashtag #ModernMonday to join the conversation next week at 1pm EST / 10am PST.

Kitchen trends seem to change every decade. How can you create a timeless space that will last?

@NateBerkus: My best advice is to go with what is classic & what has stood the test of time.

@erikaheet: In the kitchen, light and bright never goes out of style.

@livingwhit: Splurge on things you love and save trendier picks for things that can change as easily as your taste, like paint.

When designing your kitchen, what can you save money on and what is worth an investment?

@thisisheatherc: Splurge on quality materials—that's what lasts.

@TRMarchitect: Invest in you're casework. "Premium" grade custom casework can be modified for future renovations. Waste not.

No matter your lifestyle, what are key design elements that every modern kitchen needs?

@NateBerkus: A mix of what feels both contemporary and classic…a truly signature kitchen is functional & also feels very personal.

@Allie_Weiss: Sufficient storage space is key, especially for small kitchens.

@livingwhit: The kitchen is the most popular room in the house, if there's no place to gather, it's missing the mark.

What is the most common complaint that people make about their kitchens?

@thisisheatherc: Common kitchen complaints include lack of workspace & outdated appliances

@aileenkwun: As a renter, I wish my drawers and cabinets weren’t so bulky.

@tkpleslie: From personal experience, my own complaint is about kitchen ventilation. Range hoods are so important.

How can you design a space that suits the entire family's needs and can withstand wear and tear?

@NateBerkus: Your kitchen is the hardest working space in your home. It’s all about the details that help a family live better!

@Allie_Weiss: Make it a place the kids will actually want to spend time in.

@thisisheatherc: Use durable, easy-to-clean materials, and accept some things will need to be replaced as kids wear them out—save on those

What tips would you give someone who is about to undertake their first kitchen renovation?

@Organized82: Design a layout for easy accessibility, select durable materials that will last, select materials that won't "fade."

@NateBerkus: Changing out appliances can be easy...but you'll have them for a long time, so invest wisely.

@thisisheatherc: Talk to the pros! Designers & experts are your best friends and can save money in the longrun.
