What are some defining characteristics of mid-century modern architecture and design?
@PSArtMuseum: Minimal lines, strong indoor/outdoor connection, flat roofs, and open floor plans.
@aileenkwun: When I think of MCM, I think: simplicity of forms, an emphasis on function, and an honest, innovative use of materials.
@CKennedyDesign: Clean lines, generally flat roofs, post and beam construction, and in California, a connection to the outside.
@LetUsSuppose: Material Innovation. The Eameses start experimenting with bent wood with their leg splint.
Palm Springs Modernism Week is this weekend. What makes the city special to mid-century enthusiasts?
@wearejoybird: Palm Springs genuinely feels like you're being transported to a time when MCM was the norm and style was a necessity!
@PSArtMuseum: Palm Springs features many mid-century modern masterpieces and the Architecture and Design Center!
@thisisheatherc: Palm Springs' popularity w the 50s jet set made it a haven for high-design homes
@CKennedyDesign: I love that our architects studied under Bauhaus masters but brought the principles to our unique climate
How can homeowners introduce mid-century elements into contemporary homes?
@MTHWKSHN: Scale. A textile by Girard adds a nice touch. Or go big, get a Womb Chair.
@modernindenver: Furnishing a MCM home is the best part! Hire a local picker and scout estate sales.
@designmilk: Do your research, know what you're buying, look for original designs, or go vintage.
Why do you think this movement is so popular today? To what do you attribute its resurgence?
@wearejoybird: The style is so timeless and it remains undated because it doesn't have any period flourishes (like, say, Victorian style).
@CKennedyDesign: I think in an increasingly complicated world, people are craving simplicity
@modernindenver: The MCM movement has resurged bc consumers are becoming better educated on good design + materials
What are some of your favorite brands for mid-century modern furniture and design?
@MTHWKSHN: Just to name a few @fritzhansen @vitra @Cassina and Carl Hansen & Søn
@PSArtMuseum: Vladimir Kagan is on our mind right now with his presentation at the museum!
@Allie_Weiss: Favorite brands for midcentury? Could spend days in the Knoll or Herman Miller archives.
@CKennedyDesign: In terms of furniture designers: Adrian Pearsall, Milo Baughman, Eames.
@thisisheatherc: When buying modern furniture, shop the original brands to know you're getting an authentic product. @BeOriginalUSA can help.
How can homeowners update their mid-century properties without disturbing their original character?
@modernindenver: When updating MCM homes, don’t forget abt the landscape. Look to materials used when it was built.
@PSArtMuseum: Take inspiration from the museum's Frey House II and the homes featured during @modernismweek
@CKennedyDesign: I think it okay to gently disturb. The MCM greats were innovators. If they were here today they would be trying new things.
In celebration of Palm Springs Modernism Week, guests hosts @CKennedyDesign, @PalmSrpingsMOD, and @PSArtMuseum joined us to discuss midcentury modern design and its continuing influence today.
