Notable acquisitions include pieces by the Campana Brothers, Karen LaMonte, and Geoffrey Mann. The pieces will be included in the museum’s permanent collection that features artist and designers such as Fred Wilson, Liza Lou, Kiki Smith, and Danny Lane.
The Sphere Chandelier from the Candy Collection designed by the Campana Brothers was recently installed in the Contemporary Design Gallery. Inspired by candy sold at markets in Brazil, the chandelier is mold-blown and cased in colors over plain glass. The chandelier was produced by the Czech glass manufacturer Lasvit. The chandelier is the first piece of contemporary Brazilian design in the museum’s collection.
The museum has also appointed its new curator of modern and contemporary glass, Susie Silbert. Silbert will start her new role in April and continue to expand the collection as well as oversee future programing for the wing’s five galleries.
Designed by Thomas Phifer and Partners, the museum was recently awarded the AIANY Design Award for the wing. Curved white walls guide the visitor through free-standing displays while a skylight system fills the space with natural light.
