Founded in 2012 by recent Parsons School of Design graduates, Souda designs and manufactures furniture, lighting, and home decor items. Souda (pronounced “soh-duh”) is a Japanese word that roughly translates to “Oh, yeah!” so we’re saying “Souda” to these six innovative designs.

Sculptural pendant light cast from leather mold

Each Kawa Porcelain Pendant Light is individually slip-cast in a reusable leather mold. The complex process yields a one-of-a-kind pendant light that has the illusion of a textile, captured from the softness of the leather mold. The Pendant provides a warm natural light that communicates with the form and surface of the pendant, creating a distinctive light output that is subtly different from pendant to pendant, furthering the singular quality of each light.

Sculptural candelabra made of fiberglass and concrete

An exploration of the possibilities of materials, Souda’s Kreten Candelabra employs stretch fabric as a mold for fiberglass reinforced concrete. Designed by Isaac Friedman-Heiman, the candelabra takes its distinctive branching form through the unexpected combination of materials. A sturdy and sculptural object, the Kreten Candelabra has three openings for candlesticks, and it can also be used as a striking decorative accent when left empty.

Maple stool with geometric, sculptural seat

The Mitre Stool is at once simple and complex, harnessing a basic form with unexpected visual details. Constructed in hard maple wood, the stool includes four slightly flared legs and an angular seat. Comprised of four separate planes of wood, the seat is designed as a play on geometric standards, creating a surprisingly comfortable seat that maintains a distinctive look. It is available in a counter height and as a low stool.

Spun aluminum pendant with copper finish

The Signal Pendant Light is at once simple and sculptural. Comprised of a spun aluminum shade that is met with a polished central stem, the Signal Pendant Light hovers above a dining room table, kitchen counter, or living room interior. The light uses warm LEDs and indirect light to create a welcoming diffusion of light that remains unobtrusive in a space.

Sculptural side table made of fiberglass and concrete

Souda’s Kreten Side Table employs stretch fabric as a mold for fiberglass reinforced concrete. Due to the nature of the materials—the stretch of the fabric and the weight of the concrete, each table takes on a distinctive form. The result is a truly one-of-a-kind side table that marries both industrial qualities and an organic sensibility.

It is also available in a shorter height.

Inspired shelving system in maple and powder-coated steel

The Strut Shelving System from Brooklyn–based Souda is inspired by the Manhattan Bridge and the construction methods used for early aircraft carriers. The shelf presents a marriage of modern minimalism and classic architecture construction, as exemplified by the suspension style metal brackets and simple wood plank shelf. The modular system is functional and versatile, making it an ideal choice for both residential and commercial space.

This image shows ten Strut Shelves combined together for a full wall display.
