An essential home furnishing, a desk is not only functional, but can also make a statement in a modern home office. Our favorite desks include an iconic Albers desk, streamlined wood options, and a simple desk with unexpected leather details.

Trestle leg desk with white-washed wood top

Philadelphia–based Lostine is focused on the desire to make and live with objects that are not only utilitarian, but also aesthetically pleasing. The Brandywine furniture series marries simple, functional silhouettes with a thoughtful play of materials. This desk features a solid oak top that is available with a light or dark finish. A simple rectangle, the desktop rests on a steel frame, adding stability to the table along with a distinctive look.

Iconic Albers writing desk with yellow top and black drawers

A modern reconstruction of Josef Albers original 1927 design, this writing desk was built for the Moellenhoff family. Although their home was destroyed in the war, this piece, along with Albers’ famous nesting tables, was saved and brought to the United States prior to the outbreak of World War II. Nearly an exact copy of the original desk, the writing desk is made of solid oak with a yellow lacquered glass top, black lacquered drawer fronts, brass hardware, and an oak side panel that can be raised to create a larger work space.

Laptop desk that resembles a dresser

Copeland’s Catalina furniture series features clean lines, organic influences, and geometric forms. The Catalina furnishings are suggestive of America’s midcentury modern designers, and will complement modern and traditional interiors alike. The Catalina Laptop Desk is a substantial furnishing with space-saving details. Featuring a file drawer, the Catalina Laptop Desk resembles a dresser.

Extending walnut table or desk

The Extending Table from 2131 is an innovative home furnishing that can be used as a desk or table. Crafted from rich walnut wood, the Extending Table can expand from five feet to ten feet, making it easy to adapt from a casual four-person meal to a dinner party with eight guests. While most extending dining tables require removing and storing a table leaf, this table expands simply by sliding the table, making it easy to adjust. When used as a work station, the table can be angled to create two spacious desktops.

Black-washed modern desk with curved sides

Designed by Marcel Wanders for Moooi, the Woood Desk is a minimalist desk with thoughtful details. Stained in a sleek black, the desk is comprised of an oak veneer top and beech frame. Although largely angular, the desk features gracefully curved sides in the desk top as well as rounded legs for a balanced, cohesive feel. Ideal for a computer workspace, the Woood Desk includes a two-inch plug hole to accommodate wires and chargers, keeping the surface of the desk streamlined and clean.

Sculptural and minimalist wood computer desk

The Copenhague Series from HAY was designed in collaboration with Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for the new buildings at the University of Copenhagen. The series includes furniture for dormitory rooms, classrooms, and common spaces, and is characterized by its functionality and warmth. The Copenhague Desk has a distinctive silhouette—the tabletop appears to fold out of the trestle style legs, which gives the desk a sense of mobility and lightness despite its sturdy nature. The backrest of the desk similarly appears to fold out from the legs, and provides a functional rest for books and notepads, as well as a visually interesting detail.

Streamlined wood desk with leather top and leather-lined drawers

The Cedric Desk from SCP was designed by Kay + Stemmer as a part of the SCP 2009 collection. The desk is at once simple and detailed, and is defined by refined lines and master craftsmanship. From a distance, the Cedric Desk appears angular, but an up close inspection shows rounded edges in the corners and lines of the desk, softening the look of the piece and giving it an overall sense of subtlety. The desk is crafted from European walnut wood and features a leather top and leather-lined drawers.

Simple modern desk with thin tabletop and splayed legs

The Catalina Desk is an elegant furnishing that is defined by its simple silhouette. Resting on four splayed legs, the Catalina Desk is comprised of a rectangular tabletop that includes a drop down keyboard tray. The desk can be used as a conventional desk in an office, or as a distinctive accent in an entryway or hallway. Crafted from American black walnut wood, the Catalina Desk features a rich, warm wood grain.
