For the structures that stand the test of time, there's always a chance for adaptive re-use, as these five projects attest.
The 1630s warehouse dates back to the Dutch Golden Age. More recently, the one-time coffee depot became an artist's studio that fell into disrepair.

In the lofty Amsterdam apartment of Texas-born Hunter Hindman and Shelby Carr, mid-century modern mixes freely with contemporary Dutch design in a setting transposed from the 17th century. More specifically, the 1630s warehouse dates back to the Dutch Golden Age. More recently, the one-time coffee depot became an artist's studio that fell into disrepair.

Indoor outdoor garden by concrete staircase

Layer by layer, a crumbling 18th-century flat in the middle of Barcelona found new life at the hands of architect Benedetta Tagliabue. Once through the street-level entrance, the property's modern garage door comes into view. Stairs lead up to the kitchen.

Pico Island Holiday Home in Portugal exterior

This Portuguese summer home exemplifies adaptive reuse and the romance of an untamed coast. Initially unassuming, the home appears hidden from the road, perched on the sloping edge of the island and partially wrapped in the basalt walls from an 18th-century farmhouse. Architects Ines Vieira da Silva and and Miguel Vieira approached the site with a vision to create a relationship with the landscape; they designed the 2,600-square-foot holiday home to not only be a simple escape, but also to frame the weathered coast and reflect its past. “Both paths to the house were designed with basalt stone, as if they were still a rural path,” Vieira da Silva says.

The new concrete exterior has already been transformed by the rain and humidity of the Azores, and now sports an aged look. The color contrasts with the basalt wall and dark soil of the Ilha Preta ("Black Island"). Vieira da Silva anticipates that surprising patterns and textures will develop on the outer walls over time.

farmhouse, stone, Matali Crasset

Cerebral architect Matali Crasset turned this stone farmhouse into a flexible, open environment for a Parisian jewelry designer Michèle Monory and her many houseguests. Set deep in the heart of a forest near France’s Chinon region, not far from the Loire Valley and its chateaux, the structure has no specific style and is, therefore, difficult to date—Monory supposes it, along with the two barns on the property, could be 200 years old.

Architect Piers Taylor's renovation of an old gameskeeper's cottage from the 1780's, complete with a castellated roof and sweeping meadow below, is an exercise in dramatic modernization, one that takes advantage of everything its storybook setting has to offer.
