Landscape designer Bernard Trainor masterminded a seamless garden to surround a 1958 Silicon Valley Eichler. In addition to creating the illusion of more space, he used paving to help steer the eye through the residents’ irregularly shaped lot. He also divided the yard into four “garden rooms”: an entry courtyard with a fire pit for entertaining, a traditional backyard with a lawn and a dining area, a meditative space just off the master bedroom, and a side garden near the guesthouse.
Seeking a modern shell for their mid-century pieces, a pair of collectors found a relatively untouched Eichler in San Rafael, California. The two had spent years collecting furniture for their apartments in Chicago and New York, and finally found a place for the items in their new home.
Faced with the challenge of renovating the work of mid-century master, design principal Stephen Shoup of building Lab worked to replace austerity with intimacy. Adding fencing and windows, he softened this San Rafael, California, Eichler home, providing a sense of filtered connection between the home, its landscape, and its history.
Two tech professionals living in an early 1970s Eichler home in Silicon Valley desired a more open space for their young kids to play. Klopf Architecture started removing walls, and ended up with a light-filled great room that seamlessly integrates kitchen, dining, and living spaces.
In Palo Alto, California, Klopf Architecture, Arterra Landscape Architects, and Flegels Construction renovated a traditional Eichler home in a manner that feels entirely consistent with its original philosophy. Known as the Truly Open Eichler, the home establishes a strong connection between the interior and exterior thanks to a fully opening glass wall.
After commissioning Klopf Architecture to design an addition to their ranch-style property more than 10 years ago, a Burlingame, California, couple with three children started looking for a modern space they could make into a permanent home. The duo tapped Klopf once again to design the contemporary house they’d been seeking from the start, and their vision finally came to fruition with a remodeled Eichler. From the kitchen to the laundry rooms, this home has been completely transformed into a clean, open space with rooms that blend seamlessly into each other.
