To update a Victorian house in Toronto, DUBBELDAM architecture + design carried the concept of contrast through the exterior, juxtaposing the home’s 125-year-old red brick façade with vertical, black-stained cedar cladding at the back.
From the street, this Sydney house’s decorative facade reveals nothing of the dramatic contemporary extension at the back. The 1920s bungalow had beautiful bones but some major problems, including a poorly designed addition to the back that had to be removed. In its place, Tribe Studio designed a gray brick box that connects directly to the garden.
“The concept was to have a half-historic, half-modern house,” says architect Jonah Busick of Foundry12 of this modern Phoenix residence. Busick and his client, designer Joel Contreras, decided to give the 800-square-foot house two “faces” by maintaining the original red brick walls at the front and constructing a steel, glass, and concrete addition at the back—ultimately doubling the house’s footprint to 1,602 square feet.
In their renovation of a pre-WWII bungalow in Victoria, Australia, Andrew Maynard Architects decided to leave the structure deliberately incomplete. The existing bungalow transitions into an empty frame that houses an open-air corridor.
A modest, single-story home perched atop a steeply sloping site in Sydney’s Annandale suburb received a dramatic, two-story rear extension that increases its floor space and exposure to sunlight.
Though the front of this 1880s home in Adelaide, Australia, maintains a traditional facade due to strict heritage laws, the rear is modern eye candy at its best. Engaging both an architect and an interior designer to collaborate on a renovation and two-story extension, the residents managed to open up the interior and transform the back of the house into an improbably airy and light-filled retreat.
While its simple brick facade complements its neighbors, the rear of this Montreal duplex reveals a striking modern structure. The architects cut away a section of the second floor to make room for a patio. The exterior has been clad in corrugated galvanaized steel and cedar planks.
