Industrial structures are frequently excellent candidates for renovation: they feature large spaces that can be divided into conventional rooms or left open and airy. Designed for housing heavy goods and machinery, these buildings also have durable bones.
Cruickshank Mount Pleasant House front exterior, Toronto

This repurposed Toronto home, which formerly housed famed flower bulb distribution company Cruickshank’s, is now a local landmark in its own right, standing out on the street as a modern reminder of the building’s history. The home’s emphasis on light and linearity is evident even from the street, where carefully placed windows and a combination of stained cedar and Eternit cement-fiber panels create a stunning silhouette

In Alabama, a commercial building with a multifarious past begins a fresh chapter for a young family after a modern renovation. Built in 1920, the industrial brick building has had previous incarnations as a church, a recycling center, and a pool hall, among others. Many pieces in the house, like the barstools in the kitchen, are Ikea. Others are salvaged or antique. “We keep it cheap and cheerful,” the resident says.

courtyard house exterior side

A wide cut across the top of this renovated structure—a contractor’s warehouse with
a storage yard—made room for a second-floor courtyard where the family can catch some sun but maintain their privacy. On the ground level, the front door is tucked into an ivy-covered alcove lined with ipe, a material used throughout the house.

When the client purchased his residence, a onetime warehouse for mid-century lighting fixtures, it was subdivided. He and architect Tony Unruh gutted the 1,800-square-foot building completely and created an open floor plan for the client's living areas and practice space.
