An inspired color palette helps this renovated loft achieve softness and tranquility.

To inform the color palette for this interior renovation in Stockholm, NOTE Design Studio began with three inspirational images. “We let our gut feelings lead us,” says architect Susanna Wåhlin. They chose a picture of a woman in a cashmere coat (for its softness and style), a plaza in Rome (for its timelessness), and a pair of sand-colored sneakers (for its laid-back connotation). The palette is apparent in the kitchen, where a STRIPE rug from Kinnasand accents the family’s dining table, framed by chairs and a hanging lamp by Gubi.

Stockholm loft built-in storage

A custom blue-gray built-in storage unit, which includes shelving, cupboards, and drawers, runs throughout the home, connecting the rooms. “The tone is calm and creates a dark base,” Wåhlin says. “The apricot pink, together with the sandy colors, reflect light but give a warmth to the space and contrast with the blue tones. Together, they become dynamic.”

The storage unit continues in the living room, marked by a Tiki sofa by local design company Fogia. NOTE designed the stool as well as the coffee table, which was created for the French brand La Chance as part of a series called Zorro.

“We took away a very thick, heavy staircase that led to the loft, and designed one that had a much lighter look,” Wåhlin says. “The new one, made of steel, looks simple and indeed light—but is in fact super heavy and was a real challenge to construct.”

Stockholm-based NOTE Design Studio was approached by a family of four who’d just purchased a 2,150-square-foot loft in the city’s Södermalm district. Built in the 1930s, the home had experienced its share of renovations, the most recent of which focused on hard, thick materials, like glass partitions and metal details. “Our client travels internationally and wanted a home she could feel completely relaxed in,” says NOTE’s Susanna Wåhlin. Her team created a tranquil interior by painting walls and ceilings apricot pink and sandy beige for warmth (not a single surface is white). A custom blue-gray, built-in storage system runs throughout the home, making a level horizon. The second floor is accessible via a pared-down, geometric steel staircase that’s tucked behind a similarly shaped fireplace. The color palette also applies to the furnishings, many of which NOTE designed themselves.
