Call it cliché or cabin porn, but there's something especially warm and organic about rooms such as these. Whether it's the colors, the soft fabrics, or the fireplace, they project something we just have to call "cozy."

In central Spain, a pair of architects crafted this modern vacation home attuned to its pastoral setting. Downstairs, bedrooms and a library offer private spaces. Wide-plank blond wood wraps the walls, floors, and ceilings, creating a cozy shiplike experience.

Designing a house for this setting was a thrilling puzzle of aesthetics and terrain for a young architect. The house they built that year suited the couple for 30 years of long summer vacations, but recently, as the architect tells us, it was time for an upgrade.

Built-in benches function both as seating and as spare beds in the living room. The resident says the striped, hand-woven fabric she found in Greece is indestructible, and the cork flooring throughout the house has gone 40 years without needing replacing.

Mami Kobayashi and Ishii Hideaki in the kitchen with double-decker wood-burning stove

Setsumasa and Mami Kobayashi’s weekend retreat, two and a half hours northwest of Tokyo, is “an arresting concept,” photographer Dean Kaufman says, who documented the singular refuge in the Chichibu mountain range. “It’s finely balanced between rustic camping and feeling like the Farnsworth House.”

Mami and Ishii Hideaki (a friend and .......Research employee) prepare lunch in the cozy main building. The room is rustic and utilitarian, with a double-decker wood-burning stove, tons of open storage, and a sink fashioned from galvanized buckets. But there’s an underlying high-design ethos: The wire baskets are handmade classics from Korbo, a Swedish company, and what looks like a paper-wrapped box in front of the stove is actually a leather cushion by Japanese artist Nakano.

An architect recast this 1960s artist’s retreat in southeastern Norway. The interiors are clad in white-glazed pine, a contrast to the black-stained facade. The brick fireplace is original. Near a Polder sofa by Hella Jongerius for Vitra is a coffee table of Sævik’s design. The rocking chair is vintage and came with the house.

Inside the main living area, tongue-and-grooved white pine covers the walls and vaulted ceilings, and a red closet door, built of salvaged pine from the original house, slides open and closed on barn track hardware.

Two years ago architect Chad Everhart came across an old farmhouse near Boone, North Carolina. He could tell it dated back to the Great Depression by the 1930s-era cardboard—once used as insulation—that he found stuffed down between its tongue-and-groove walls. The structure was was falling down, literally. They demolished the building—salvaging some hemlock and chestnut flooring here, some one-inch-by-ten-inch planks of white pine there—and set about rebuilding on the original concrete block foundation.

A new home at Sea Ranch, a half-century-old enclave of rugged modernist houses on the Northern California coast, captures the spirit of its surroundings. Boi sconces, which David Weeks designed for Ralph Pucci, illuminate the bedroom. The area rug is by Stephanie Odegard.
