Architect Eero Saarinen designed this iconic piece in 1948 when Florence Knoll asked for "a chair that was like a basket full of pillows - something she could really curl up in." The chair is unequivocally comfy and still in production today.

The residents of this striking angular New Haven home furnished it with help from their daughter, an interior designer. Classic modernist icons, such as a Saarinen Womb chair for Knoll, a Herman Miller Eames lounge chair, and an Eileen Grey E1027 side table look at home alongside present-day pieces such as an Encore sofa (which handily folds down into a sleeping surface) from Room & Board and a Doka rug designed and produced by Stephanie Odegard. The Wohlert pendant lights from Louis Poulsen were designed by Vilhelm Wohlert in 1959, but grouped as such, they appear distinctly contemporary.

Sunlight streams through formerly boarded-up windows in the living area that was once Madame Wong’s stage. “When we took off the drywall, we realized there were windows in there. So we had more made to match these four,” says Dan. The new windows open up

In Los Angeles, California, a family of four inhabits a polychrome fantasia in the heart of Chinatown. Formerly a restaurant, punk rock night club, and furniture warehouse, the Berniers’ loft is anything but boring. Sunlight streams through formerly boarded-up windows in the living area that was once a stage. “When we took off the drywall, we realized there were windows in there. So we had more made to match these four,” says Dan. The new windows open up the east side of the building to views of the courtyard below and the San Gabriel mountains in the distance. The apartment is furnished with an eclectic mix of furniture, including an Eero Saarinen womb chair.

White Algues sculpture designed by Bouroullec brothers.

Seeking a modern shell for their mid-century pieces, a pair of collectors found a relatively untouched Eichler in San Rafael, California—and a built-in excuse to acquire more furniture. After painting the sitting room room Kendall Charcoal from Benjamin Moore’s Aura line, the client [seen here seated in the Womb Chair] wanted a sculptural element that would show up against the dark hue. So he assembled his white Algues set, designed by the Bouroullec brothers for Vitra, on the wall behind the sofa with pillow by Judy Ross. “Though the Bouroullec piece is manufactured in mass quantities, you can create your own take on it,” he says. “It looks great no matter how you place it. I think of it almost like an inkblot—the randomness is part of its beauty.”

A pair of LC2 chairs by Le Corbusier are ideal spots for watching the river down below. The Womb chair by Eero Saarinen is a close second.

With nearly a half century of architectural experience, Peter Cohen designed this ingenious spine-and-module home for him and his wife Sally in the coastal forests just outside Ellsworth, Maine. A pair of LC2 chairs by Le Corbusier are ideal spots for watching the river down below. The Womb chair by Eero Saarinen is a close second.

Seattle modern living room with Womb chair and wood stove

Melding corrugated metal with Douglas Fir wood, a sustainable home in Seattle brings nature inside while preserving a couple’s privacy. For the living room, exposed fir ceiling beams help muffle acoustics. With black leather seating, a Knoll Womb Chair (tucked away in the righthand corner) and a Rais Rondo stove, the room is comfortable but sophisticated.
