Originally trained as a metal worker, Jean Prouvé's diverse career ranged from architectural design (including numerous prefab projects) to furniture. We've collected some of his pieces as they appear in six modern homes.

This inviting home in Dallas makes the most of its wooded lot with an interior courtyard and plenty of windows. Its living room features a mix of comfortable seating with more unique, collectible pieces — like the Jean Prouvé daybed or Vincent van Duysen chairs by the window. "I wanted the space to feel like a home rather than a museum,” interior designer Joshua Rice says.

Modern kitchen with onyx kitchen island and wood slatted ceiling

Restrained by local building code, architect Michael O’Sullivan forwent a flashy facade on this new Auckland, New Zealand, home, saving the fireworks for the interior. O’Sullivan designed the ceiling “to have a knitted or woven quality like that of wool or silk.” It dives down over the kitchen and dining area, eventually reaching a point at the entry that is low enough to touch. Here, resident Jes Wood leans against the onyx kitchen island while her daughter Ruby hangs out. Replica Jean Prouvé chairs surround the dining table; a vase by Bruce and Estelle Martin for Kamaka Pottery sits on top. The Reel table under the television is by Atelier Oï for B&B Italia.

hudson river valley renovation

Seeking an escape from bustling city life, a Manhattan couple embarked on a renovation in the verdant Hudson Valley. The contractor, Tim Kimmel of Kimmel Builders, removed built-in shelving behind the stone fireplace and installed a Cor-Ten steel panel in its place. Vitra manufactures the Jean Prouvé–designed Standard dining table and side chairs.

In the same renovation: the residents inherited the Modernica sofa, chaise, and table from the previous owners. They added a Prouvé daybed and Jasper Morrison cork stools, all by Vitra. The cedar interior walls were inspired by the exterior cladding and are finished in orange oil beeswax by Howard.

Fire Island living area with built-in sofa and Wire Base Elliptical Table by Charles and Ray Eames

An intervention from a clever interior designer spared this old beach house on Fire Island, New York, from demolition. In its living room, a Potence wall lamp by Jean Prouvé and a Dioscuri table lamp by Michele De Lucchi for Artemide illuminate the living area, which includes a Wire Base Elliptical Table by Charles and Ray Eames.
