Following a history of craftsmanship and architecture in Middle Eastern, Moroccan tiles are made from enameled terra cotta whose edges are hand-bevelled to achieve a precise edge. The name "Moroccan" has expanded to include a range of modern products, even those made from cement, that form geometric patterns. They add a rich layer of tradition and texture to any room.

This 200-year-old factory in Umbria was transformed into an inviting home by designer Paola Navone. In the shower: custom Carocim tile, created in Morocco.

Moroccan tile wall in Phoenix Industrial Bungalow

A renovation helped this historic home in Phoenix step into the 21st century. Off its living room, two small bedrooms and a bathroom can be reached through sliding doors that, when closed, continue the cheerful pattern of the Moroccan cement tiles covering the wall.

The tiles continue in the home's bedroom. With the house often open to the outside, dust easily drifts in. Fortunately, the concrete floor, speckled with white aggregate mix, is easy to clean.

Driven by the death of several appliances, a San Francisco family found that a spanking new kitchen delivers a good dose of domestic harmony along with the excuse to execute a complete home makeover. The residents' daughter Sasha samples berries at the island while their son Wes, perched on the counter, clutches the whipped cream—similar in color to the backsplash, made of traditional Moroccan tiles and available through Emory & Cie.

Renovated Upper East Side apartment

This 400-square-foot Upper East Side apartment got a new, modern look. "In the kitchen, we changed the layout," says James Davison, who managed the renovation. "It was a galley kitchen, extending lengthways into the room. We spun it back along the back wall. The tiles are Moroccan concrete tiles that came from a supplier here in Manhattan. The idea was to inject some color and playfulness into the space with the blue cabinetry." Photo by Alan Gastelum.

Vidal Renovation Bathroom

A husband-and-wife design team revived this 1940s home in East Los Angeles's Mt. Washington area for a single man. Bearing few tell-tale signs of bachelorhood, aside from a photography and music studio in the garage, the renovation retained the home's dual fireplaces and added an array of modern tiles.

The home's second bathroom is an exercise in contrast. Lighter neutrals are offset by vivid Moroccan cement mosaic floor tile.
