We see a lot of superb bathrooms at Dwell - these are just some of the best we've seen yet.
Modern Japanese-style bathroom by George Nakashima

George Nakashima’s sublime Japanese-style bathroom endures at his rural estate. Its sunken bathtub mimics the shape of a swimming pool on the grounds. His daughter, Mira Nakashima, took over the studio after his death and now lives and works on the property. “A Japanese garden often has a central pond derived from the character for ‘heart’ or ‘spirit,’ and this may be an abstraction of that character,” she says of the tub’s sculptural form.

Bathroom tub overlooking a courtyard in a Mexico City home

A designer carved out this domestic oasis in Mexico City. The master bath is lined from floor to walls in silvery gray marble. An Almond bathtub by Porcelanosa is accented by a tub filler from Hansgrohe; the room looks out to a private garden.

Brooklyn renovation interior bathroom

A couple got their hands dirty in Brooklyn by rehabilitating a 19th-century tenement to reveal decades of layers and scores of possibilities. In the upper-level bathroom, richly-hued azure tiles painstakingly fired by the client cover the walls and ceiling.

The master bathroom is softly lit by a skylight. The bath, by Laufen, is sunk into the floor to maintain a feeling of space.

Pieter Weijnen’s brand of maritime modernism brings a touch of magic to Amsterdam’s Steigereiland, where the architect built his family’s home. Inhabiting one of the development’s narrow plots, the house harkens back to the area’s nautical roots with a suspended shiplike story, visible from the street. The master bath, by Laufen, is sunk into the floor to maintain a feeling of space.

Casa Na white tiled bathroom

Architect José Andrade Rocha recognized the beauty hidden in a historic flat during its renovation. White tiles — hydraulic ones on the floor and “biselado” (meaning “beveled”) ones on the walls — make for a very tranquil bathroom
