Fire provides a warmth of light as well as temperature; it's ideal for when the sun is setting, the air is cooling, and the night sky is rich with gloam colors. Tour 7 fireplaces and fire pits that grace these modern homes.
Backyard fireplace area with a long steel-and-ipe bench and Willy Guhl Loop chairs

The client behind this house, Matt Jacobsen, doesn’t just abide by the mantra “less is more,” he wholeheartedly embraces it. His Southern California home is a compact ode to minimal living. Jacobson and the architect, Michael Lee, designed the long steel-and-ipe bench, which suspends from the low concrete wall. His girlfirend Kristopher Dukes relaxes on a Willy Guhl Loop chair with her German Shepherd, Major.

Wooden bench and fire pit in backyard

A gut renovation and a landscaping makeover helped a couple reconnect with the outdoors. A cantilevered ipe bench hugs a custom board-formed concrete fire pit. “When I come home, this is like a sanctuary. I open up the doors and sit outside and read, or work around the house,” says resident Colleen Nusinow.

Modern interior with custom fireplace and concrete wall

It's not quite outdoors, but we had to include it. This Marmol Radziner–designed prefab house, trucked onto a remote Northern California site, takes the pain out of the construction process. The residents, who are passionate cooks, installed a Mugnaini wood-fired oven in their kitchen and had a custom Grillery fireplace-barbecue built into the concrete block wall on their deck. Beneath the grill they store oak firewood collected from their property.

California isn't known for its front porch culture, but Grunbaum loves Venice's walk streets and their pedestrian vibe, so he employed landscape designer Stephanie Bartron to orient his small patio towards the street. The house itself acts as a windbreak,

Architect Barbara Bestor created this 2,000–square-foot, three-bedroom, three-bath home that harbors a traditional sensibility with a contemporary heart. California isn't known for its front porch culture, but Grunbaum loves Venice's walk streets and their pedestrian vibe, so he employed landscape designer Stephanie Bartron to orient his small patio towards the street. The house itself acts as a windbreak, and lush patio furniture and a small fire pit turn what could have been another exercise in backyard solipsism into the home's most neighborly spot.

An architectural designer and an artist harnessed the collective power of their design firm to remake a dilapidated mid-century gem into a hillside perch for their family. The outdoor fireplace is one of the few remnants of the original structure.

A modern makeover put a Baton Rouge home in touch with its picturesque surroundings. The home's motif of stone directional pavers culminates in these concrete benches, ideal for hosting and relaxing. When cooking, the residents can easily walk over to a nearby garden for vegetables, or chicken coup for eggs. The large ipe-clad addition on the right is the master bedroom, also equipped with sliding doors for easy outdoor access.
