These quirky custom beds and bedrooms remind us that no part of the home—even one where you'll mostly be sleeping—should be taken for granted.
Joint bathroom and bedroom with a Neptune bathtub and wall art

In Toronto, a painter accustomed to crashing in his studio created an airy artistic haven with both working and living quarters for a more balanced and polished picture. The bedroom mixes a bed and lamps from Ikea with a deep, luxurious bathtub (an inexpensive model from Neptune). The artworks include original prints by New York artist Franco Mondini-Ruiz.

San Francisco floating home bedroom

Anchored in a small canal, this floating house in San Franisco is all about space and light. In the second floor master bedroom, a custom captain’s bed designed by the homeowner, features drawers and storage underneath. Its towering height allows for views out the nearby window.

The glass platform bed is backed by a headboard of two sheets of lucite embedded with aquamarine wool from Maharam. Hanging pillow-side, electroluminescent draperies glow in the dark.

When an urban expat couple decided to build the suburban house they wanted rather than the one their neighbors expected, they ended up with a spare but airy jewel box and no wooden shingles. The glass platform bed is backed by a headboard of two sheets of lucite embedded with aquamarine wool from Maharam. Hanging pillow-side, electroluminescent draperies glow in the dark.

Hand-cranked aluminum bed

Two San Francisco art and travel addicts overhauled a loft—and customized a pair of shipping containers—to accommodate their art collection and reflect their passions. Furniture designer Pat Carson created a plethora of custom fixtures for the guest room, including a riveted aluminum Murphy bed.

Bedroom in an Istanbul loft

This unconventional, 2,000-square-foot apartment has no full walls, and just one room. Uninterrupted cement flooring was chosen for the mezzanine. The cement extends to the bed and bathtub block, while the exposed ductwork and black beams above dramatically accentuate the ceilings.

custom-built bed in Cincinnati

Thanks to a folding glass wall and a custom-built bed, dreams of sleeping under the stars came true for a Cincinnati, Ohio, couple. The residents initially wanted a retractable roof, but were persuaded to do something more practical. "We kind of noodled around with the idea and ultimately decided that it would be easier if the bed came out on the porch than the roof rolling back over the bedroom,"a rchitect John Senhauser  says. A bank of folding doors by NanaWall opens to a terrace that overlooks a swimming pool. The bed is normally stationed against a wall but can slide onto the terrace when the residents wish to sleep outside.

Industrial bed frame with white linens

Seeking simplicity and open space, a Boulder-area couple settled on a wooded hilltop with views of the mountains and the city. The residents created this bed frame out of a rusted well pipe and scaffolding fittings.
