Wood-burning stoves aren't just for rustic cabins in the woods anymore, the timeless and energy-efficient heating system has worked it's way into the modern home. There have been many advances in the technology of the wood-burning stove and not only do these modern designs burn much cleaner and more efficiently than older conventional stoves, but the view of the fire is just spectacular. Take a look at these ten modern homes featuring cozy wood-burning stoves.

SLANTED AND ENCHANTED

TAKE ME HOME

A “tree house” of clean lines, ample glass, and thoughtful ingenuity lets a Washington, DC–area family and a stream of weekend guests enjoy prefab living in an unlikely locale: just outside Lost River, West Virginia. A Movie sofa, by CB2, and a Rais wood-burning stove are in the living room.

CONVERTED LOFT FIT FOR A MODERN FAMILY IN COPENHAGEN

In an up-and-coming area of Copenhagen, a pair of designers and their twin girls inhabit a converted loft, filling it with serious design savvy and a hefty dose of creativity. The living room features a sofa from Engell; a suspended Parentesi lamp by Achille Castiglioni and Pio Manzù for Flos (Olsen’s “all-time favorite”); and a wood-burning stove made by Aduro.

A MODERN GLASS ADDITION IN BELGIUM

For this tiny house in the Belgian forest, a little extra square footage comes in the form of a glassed-in addition with a stellar view. In the living area, a Tufty-Time sofa by Patricia Urquiola for B&B Italia, a Soft Grid blanket by Established & Sons, and a wood-burning stove by Stûv keep her comfortable.

A STACKED CABIN FOR A STEEP SLOPE

A steeply sloped site in the Wisconsin forest, plus an equally steep budget, led architect Brian Johnsen to reinvent the archetypal cabin for a sturdy vacation home. A Rais Pina wood-burning stove keeps things cozy on the West Elm Henry sofa and Eames lounge chairs.

JENS RISOM'S BLOCK ISLAND FAMILY RETREAT

Designer Jens Risom returns to his 1967 prefab off the coast of Rhode Island, readying it for his family's next generation. Inside the house, a relatively new Rais wood-burning stove is next to a Risom Rocker from Design Within Reach, a 2009 piece from the designer.

ENGLISH DESIGNER'S LIVE/WORK HOME

In southwest England, interior designer and avid furniture collector Kathryn Tyler built her home around the vintage pieces she’d amassed over a decade. In the living room, a Nelson bench doubles as a coffee table, and a wood-burning stove from Cleanburn Stoves keeps the space warm.

BRAVER'S NEW WORLD

A revamp of this small suburban Massachusetts home doubled its size while giving the yard, the neighbors, and the planet a little breathing room. The living room at the front of the house benefits from the privacy afforded from the cedar screen and the light let in by a wall of windows. The wood-burning stove and collection of paintings give the modern home a bit of New England charm.

RENOVATING AN AGING MILL IN FRANCE

To heat this small structure in southwestern France , the homeowners installed a wood-burning stove equipped with a built-in water boiler. The stove was built into an old doorway that was no longer needed. By wrapping the walls in sheet steel, the homeowners made the area fire-resistant, and the warmth from the stove is amplified as it reflects into the room.

FAMILY STYLE

When a Japanese couple asked architects Takaharu and Yui Tezuka to design a small home that would evoke the Italian love of food, informal gatherings, and natural settings, the result was la dolce vita in Tokyo. The architects designed the large dining table, which is framed by the open kitchen, the wood-burning stove, and the garden beyond.
