In the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco, what started off as a decorating job turned into a full-blown renovation for Nicole Hollis, founder of Nicole Hollis Interior Design. "When I walked inside, I knew it needed to be redone," she recalls. "The cabinets were made of plastic laminate that was peeling off, it was really small, and the rooms just didn't fit." The living room and dining room were originally separated by a central fireplace, which Hollis removed to create this great room. She installed a custom eight-foot-long open gas fireplace in the living room (equipped with sensors that automatically turn it off when someone gets too near to the flames). Photo by Ben Mayorga.

Barbara Hill designed this modern home in Atlanta, Georgia. Its informal dining space has a slightly rustic feel, thanks in large part to the centerpiece fireplace. The room sports bronze and wood in the form of a Lindsey Adams Adelman chandelier for Roll & Hill and a table by Terry Dwan, mixed with folk-art touches like the Eames House Birds and a cuckoo clock from Diamantini & Domeniconi. The PK8 chairs from Republic of Fritz Hansen were designed by Poul Kjærlholm and sourced from Kuhl-Linscomb in Houston, Texas. Photo by Gregory Miller.

Metals broker S. J. Sherbanuk (left) and designer James Campbell (right) created a new home in Collingwood, Ontario, with old scrap. "Repurpose, refurbish, recycle" was the guiding principle for the project. Their outdoor fireplace adjoins the screened-in porch. Photo by Lorne Bridgman.

In his renovated Long Island house, resident Joe Dolce sits in front of a striking floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace on a vintage 1950s couch he found at a thrift store in Asbury Park, New Jersey. He had the couch and the Donghia armchair recovered in a stain-resistant Sunbrella fabric by Andrew Grossman Upholstery. The Flokati rug was picked up at a thrift store in Florida. Hanging on the wall behind Dolce is a piece of art by British painter Tom Hammick. Photo by Raimund Koch.
